Krolewicz to campaign Mongoose GTP in 2008 One Lap of America

Jon in the GTP at the Run N’ Gun Jon Krolewicz will be teaming up with Mongoose Motorsports to run a Mongoose GTP in the twenty-fifth running of the TireRack Cannonball One Lap of America

After driving all-wheel-drive cars in his first four One Lap events, Krolewicz will try his hand at the 505-horsepower mid-engine rear-wheel-drive Mongoose.

“It’s certainly a different step, but one I am looking forward to,” Krolewicz said.

This will not be Krolewicz’s first time competing in the GTP, he won the class honors in the Pro Big Block at the 2007 Kit Car Run N’ Gun event at Gateway International Raceway outside of St. Louis.

“We have been working on the car, doing more tuning, more suspension work, and making it more reliable,” Krolewicz said. “I don’t know if it’s ready to run at the front every day, but it can run near the front, and hopefully be there at the end for a strong finish.”

The Mongoose GTP is a replica of the 1980s Lola-built Corvette Grand Touring Prototype that ran in the top class at races like the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This year One Lap of America will take place May 3-10, going as far west as Houston, as far south as Belle Rose, Louisiana, and as far north as Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The event will cover 4000 miles of street driving while stopping at ten tracks in eight states.

Krolewicz’s dad Ray will again go along as a co-driver, and as of this report, a team Mongoose GTP will be run by Danny Popp and Jeremy Herzberg.

The Mongoose Motorsports Grand Sport replica that Krolewicz will race in Germany
Jon Krolewicz will travel to Germany the first week of April to drive a Mongoose Grand Sport replica in competition for the German TV show D Motor on DMAX TV.

D Motor is a German TV show where cars are compared against each other in a variety of competitions. This episode will see Krolewicz face off in a Mongoose Grand Sport replica (left) against Sabine Schmidt in a Shelby Cobra replica. (below)

A Shelby Cobra replica like the one Sabine Schmidt will drive against the Mongoose Grand Sport. Schmidt, the driver of the Cobra is a retired German touring car driver and popular TV host. She is also known as the “Queen of the Ring” for her 20,000 plus laps around the Nürburgring circuit in Germany.

Luckily for Krolewicz this competition will be at the VTM, a vehicle testing facility in Mendig, Germany built out of the airfield at the Gunther-Plüschow Barracks. Mendig is about 70 miles from Frankfurt and a bit easier to learn than the 13-mile Nürburgring.

“This is really exciting opportunity,” Krolewicz said, “I have raced all over the US, but getting to go overseas and race against Sabine for a TV event is way up there on the cool scale.”

The competition will include a car show; exhaust note judging, drag race, autocross and time trial.

DMAX is a German TV network owned by Discovery Communications which focuses on men’s hobbies. The show D Motor does car comparisons and often has theme shows. The theme show for this episode will be a 1960s replica car battle.
