May 3 - Day 1
Event #1 - The TireRack Wet Skid Pad - South Bend, Indiana
I would love to do some long descriptive posts, but I am not in an environment condusive to work. So we will see how this goes. As in the past, any mistakes are not my own, but products of the roads of America, and the lack of ability to actually SEE my computer screen with the consistancy needed to properly edit.
Day one started with the skidpad of course, the car had some qicked understeer, and we came home in 19th I think.. my best result ever. Then it was off to Chicago.
On the way to Chicago we say rain, and traffic. And lots and lots of cameras. There are probably more shots of us taken in the past two days than Paris Hilton. Atone point, a toll booth worker asked us "may I take your picture?" Of course we said yes, and then we got beeped at - or she did - as she took the time to take pictures with both a camera and a cell phone standing in front of us. I enjoyed it, I am not sure the people behind us did..
One of the hard parts about the GTP is paying tolls.. we have to ride into the booth with the door open, At a tool booth with the other GTP though we saw Danny using his co-driver as a toll-paying-errand boy..
Event #2, Road America Time Trial
26th Overall
I believe a word I used when talking to Mongoose about testing at Road America was "essential."
We didn't of course, and it showed. The brakes were 100% junk, not a good thing when you do 160+ mph three times a lap. THe car also started behaving funny, wandering around on the straights, and it was getting worse and worse. When I came in my comment was, "I think the AMS Evo in 06 when I was oiling down the tires in the rain was more stable."
I wasn't joking.
I was really scared, got passed by the Ultima GT-R, and then when a Beaver crossed my path I decided if the run wasn't worth killing myself for, it wasn't worth killing him either, so I hit the brakes and let him cross.
After the run, we found that the Chicago roads probably were the cause of a loosening rear wheel hub, one that made for some pretty dramatic dynamic toe.. also not something you want at 160mph.
So on too day two (after tightening (and some welding on Danny's car) Hopefully Mid America will be better.
